An Honest Moltan Roll Bar + Sake Review

December 1, 2023 by VancouverStudentEats

For my birthday this year, my girlfriend decided to take me to Moltan Roll Bar + Sake. This was our first time trying out this restaurant, but we had seen it pop up on our Instagram explore page before.

The restaurant was very small and intimate with limited seating but we managed to book a reservation the day of our dinner. There were about 5 to 6 small tables but a few tables were put together to accommodate a larger party or 6. I would say that the restaurant could comfortably seat around 12 to 15 people. We had tried to visit this restaurant a day prior but the restaurant was fully booked. The interior had pleasant wooden features, and the walls behind the bar were decorated in different sake bottles. Although we didn’t drink sake that night, we really liked the aesthetic.

For our meal we ordered a few things. The first being the Bluefin Tuna Trio set. This consisted of three different cuts of Bluefin Tuna: three pieces of Akami Nigiri, O-Toro (extra fatty tuna), and Chu-Toro (fatty tuna). This was $50 for the 9 pieces of nigiri but considering it was Bluefin Tuna it was on the cheaper side. We have both had Bluefin Tuna in the past, but it was more expensive. This was our favourite item that we ordered at Moltan as we saw extra value in the price and experience.

We also ordered the Uni-Chawanmushi (steamed egg with uni sitting in a dashi broth) as an app. This was extra creamy and delicious. The uni complemented the steamed egg and added an extra umami flavour to the dish. This was around $15 each which was a little on the pricier end but still worth every penny considering how fresh the uni tasted.

Some other items we ordered were the Saba Miso Shiso Oshi and the White Lava Roll. These items were still delicious but nothing really stood out about them. If we were to go back again we would try something else instead of these to items. Both these items were $17 each.

Finally, to end our dinner, although we were already stuffed and about to fall into a food coma, we got the Lobster Rose Pasta. Although this was a Japanese restaurant this item sounded interesting and we saw pictures of it online. The pasta itself was in a very rich and creamy sauce and the lobster and clams were cooked perfectly. There was a layer of melted cheese on top which made this dish extra savoury. Considering the price point of $32, it is something to try at least once at this restaurant.

Some things to note was the hospitable service we received. Food came out relatively fast and our tea was always topped up. We also received complimentary tea to enjoy while heading home in the cold.

I would definitely recommend the Bluefin Trio set to anyone who wants to try Moltan Roll Bar + Sake. Overall, I would rate this restaurant a solid 7.5 out of 10 and would recommend it to those who would like a higher end sushi restaurant.
