An Honest Review of Sushi Bar Shu

December 1, 2023 by VancouverStudentEats

Sushi Bar Shu, a luxury Omakase experience. For those who may not know, Omakase is when the chef sets the menu and prepares it right in front of you. This was by far the most expensive and luxurious restaurant that I have been to. At a price point of $208 per person, they give a once in a lifetime experience.

My girlfriend and I visited this restaurant back in 2022 for my birthday. It is a very intimate setting with relaxing music and a sushi chef preparing every piece of sushi in front of you. Chef Brian would also describe each dish as he placed it in front of you. The restaurant has a total of 6 seats and has 2 reservation times per night. He encouraged us to ask any questions throughout the night and made sure everything was perfect.

The menu had around 21 courses with the option to add on additional dishes. This included 3 sashimi courses, a few appetizers, nigiri sushi, handrolls, and dessert. All the dishes were really tasty and you could taste and see every detail that the chef added. Everything was super fresh and they used high quality ingredients such as Caviar and Bluefin Tuna. Since my girlfriend mentioned that it was my birthday, we received free caviar on some of our dishes. This was the first time I tried Bluefin Tuna. Although the handrolls seemed simple, it allowed the quality of the uni and tuna to shine.

Towards the end of the service, we were allowed to add other menu items. It was then where we tried the A5 Wagyu. This was my first time trying Japanese Wagyu and it was a life altering experience. The meat would just melt in your mouth and would leave you salivating for more. Although Wagyu is quite expensive, it was definitely worth it to try at least once.

The highlights of our meal was the Uni handroll, Bluefin Tuna Nigiri, Tamago, and the A5 Wagyu.

Although this restaurant is on the pricier side compared to restaurants we usually go to, it was definitely worth the experience. This is a restaurant I would recommend others to go to if they want to try high quality ingredients and if it’s a special occasion.

Wow, you and your girlfriend certainly know how to celebrate birthdays via your taste buds. I’ve never treated myself to an experience such as this, but now I am very tempted.
